Kenny Barging

“Stephen has taken the time to understand what our business needs, and I don’t mean only insurance. To him, we’re not just a number.”

‘Throwing the net out’ is an apt phrase for a company that specialises in on-water logistics, and that’s how Kenny Barging manager, James Galloway, describes the process he went through when he analysed the business’s risk management.

“I have an accountancy background, so streamlining expenses is a natural part of my role. The company had been with an insurance broker for quite some time and I wanted to make sure we had the right policies at the right price,” he says. “We asked around, keeping our options open. That’s when we were introduced to Stephen Doecke.”

James gave a selection of brokers the same list of assets – barges, boats, buildings – so he could compare apples with apples when the quotes came back.

“Asset Insurance Partners never claim to be the cheapest,” explains James. “That’s why Stephen was as surprised as we were when he calculated an immediate 15% saving on our insurance costs.”

But saving money is not the only factor which makes James very glad Kenny Barging chose to partner with Asset Insurance Partners. When the unexpected happened to one of their ships, the response from the insurer was baffling.

“Stephen could see the logic to our claim and the insurer was missing the point. So, Stephen argued that point for us. It meant we didn’t feel alone as we dealt with the impasse; Stephen had our back.”

And he continues to support the Picton-based company in ways that go far beyond insurance policy documents.

“I was a recipient of their IQ-M Scholarship. Attending the course at The Icehouse really opened my eyes to what was possible.” James laughs. “It helped me put on my big-boy boots and see our business in a whole new light.”

Ongoing mentorship from Stephen was also part of the scholarship, and that’s where his experience in business development shines. “He brings value to our company,” James says, “This is not your usual insurance broker relationship. Stephen wants people to succeed and he helps them.”

And it’s working. The O’Donnell Park Barging operation (now three boats) has grown to include Kenny Barging (two boats) and three commercial properties.

“Stephen has taken the time to understand what our business needs, and I don’t mean only insurance. To him, we’re not just a number.”
