“I’m trying to develop a team of awesome people.”

That’s how Aaron Jay, managing director of Hortus, a labour supply company specialising in viticulture and horticulture, describes his work.

So, when he sat next to Stephen Doecke at a business programme run by The Icehouse, he soon found they shared a common ethos: growing people.

“We are like-minded,” explains Aaron, “so our relationship was initially built on coaching and mentoring. I found Stephen to be a good source of truth.”

Then, when Stephen opened the door at Asset Insurance Partners, Hortus became a client. But that decision wasn’t just with insurance in mind; Aaron describes Stephen as a ‘business builder’.

“I look to work with people who fit Patrick Lencioni’s team player model: they’re hungry, humble and smart. Stephen and his whole team represent those qualities,” Aaron says.

One way in which Hortus cultivates an awesome team is by providing quality living facilities for their seasonal employees. Another way is by helping team members grow, through their ongoing relationship with The Icehouse.

“Whenever one of our team attends a programme at The Icehouse, they get their eyes opened,” smiles Aaron. “It gives them greater confidence in their role.”

He is thrilled that several of the Hortus team have received an IQ-M scholarship from Asset Insurance Partners, which provides each recipient Icehouse leadership and business education plus ongoing support.
